SARS Building Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.
The Existing building was constructed during the period 1948 and 1952 on the corner of Whites road and Chapel Street. Only three floors of the building were occupied by South African Revenue Services. SARS wanted to relocate several departments from other rented buildings to the SARS building.
The brief was for a complete refurbishment and fit-out of the existing building to comply with the SARS Standard Specifications which applies to all their buildings. The fit out included the installation of ceilings in the building to accommodate new air conditioning systems and lights. Electrical and data distribution as well as water reticulation and drainage had to be replaced for the new toilet and kitchen fit-outs.
Due to time constraints, and the fact that part of the building was already occupied, it was decided that the internal fit-out would be undertaken first and the restoration of the roof and facades, would follow as a second phase.
Heritage permits were obtained for both the internal fit-out and the external restoration.
